You’ve surely heard of the Smoketree Aquatics Committee (AQC). The AQC is a committed group of pool members who start working each October to coordinate and facilitate the following pool season. The AQC formed mid-season in 2015 when the pool was struggling under an outside management company who couldn’t give the pool the attention our members deserved. Membership was on a steady decline and rumors swirled that the pool may close. A group of concerned members came together to volunteer their time and talents to help save Smoketree Pool. Eventually, with the blessing of the Smoketree Association (SCA) who owns and operates the pool, that group became the Smoketree Aquatics Committee.
There is a lot of work and planning that goes into making each year successful — far too much for any one volunteer to accomplish on their own. Now in its fourth season of managing the pool — the Aquatics Committee has developed a structure that helps organize and distribute the workload so that each area gets the attention it deserves. Areas of operation are broken up into sub-committees led by committee leads. The sub-committees meet at the committee lead’s discretion and the committee lead then reports to the AQC monthly with progress reports. The 2018 AQC sub-committees and their heads are:
SCA Vice President of Pool Operations, Robin Spicer: The VP of Pool Operations serves on the board of the Smoketree Association where he represents the pool membership on all matters. Robin attends all SCA board meetings as well as serving as Vice President of the Aquatics Committee.
AQC President, Matt Fidler: The President leads the Aquatics Committee where all sub-committee heads come together monthly to report to membership on their progress.
AQC Treasurer, Mark Hannon: The Treasurer of the AQC coordinates with the Treasurer of the SCA (in this case Mark serves in both roles) to manage all of the pool finances as well as Swim Team funds and AQC funds acquired through fundraising activities.
AQC Secretary, Tara Hannon: The Secretary takes minutes for each of the AQC meetings to serve as a public record for our membership.
Facilities Committee Lead, Keith Captain: Facilities manages the pool facilities, coordinating all maintenance contracts, repairs and upgrades performed on the pool.
Fundraising Committee Lead, Charlie Zambito: Fundraising plans and facilitates AQC fundraisers that provide the pool with additional resources to fund social events and upgrades to the facilities.
Member Relations Committee Lead, Matt Fidler: Member Relations manages all member communications through email and social media as well as coordinating the annual membership drive.
Snack Shack Lead, Ceily Poh: Running the Snack Shack requires significant time and attention during the pool season. But even in the off-season — the Snack Shack must recruit and hire its staff and get ready for the upcoming season.
Social Committee Lead, Angie Willis: Social coordinates the calendar of social events, planning the details of the events, and securing vendors like bands and food trucks.
Swim Team Lead, Phaedra Clark: Smoketree wouldn’t be Smoketree without the Mighty Marlin Swim Team. The Swim Team must secure coaches and volunteers, recruit and register swimmers, and coordinate with the RMAL swimming league — not to mention facilitating an entire swim season.
Since the AQC formed; membership has increased each season; our pool enjoys a calendar full of social events; our swim team has increased the number of swimmers (and won their division last season); we’ve made significant upgrades to our facility including furniture, audio systems, pool covers, and more on the way; member communications have improved with regular emails and social posts; and member satisfaction continues to grow!
Smoketree wouldn’t be the pool it is today without the time, dedication and sacrifice of the Aquatics Committee. These are members who are willing to serve for a season or more — but none are interested in serving indefinitely. That’s why we need new members who are willing sacrifice time and energy to continue Smoketree’s success. The SCA and AQC recognize that this is a big commitment — and in recognition of that commitment the SCA provides the executives and committee leads of the AQC with complimentary memberships.
If you would be interested in serving with the AQC, or serving as a lead for the 2019 season, don’t wait until October! Start attending AQC meetings right away and learn all that goes into making your pool what it is today. Smoketree is your pool and is only successful because of the support and dedication of its members.
The dates of remaining 2018 Season AQC meetings are: March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, and October 10, all at 7:00pm at the Community Building.
