Holiday Greetings from your Social Committee!

One of the key objectives of your new Board of Directors is to celebrate our 40th anniversary by planning and hosting a series of community social events throughout the year. Those of us who have lived here several decades fondly remember “back in the day” when our Smoketree community had a robust, year long social calendar with fun for the entire family. Many of you have expressed a desire to bring back the enhanced sense of community such events stimulate.

We held our first event, a Potluck Supper, at the Smoketree Community Center on Friday the 17th of last month. We posted signs throughout the community and, despite the fact that this same night turned out to have a playoff football game for Monacan, we had a good turnout, and those who came had a good time. Lesson learned: no more socials on football nights 😀.

This month, we will host a good old fashioned “Yuletide Gathering” with caroling, a Yule Log, hot drinks, Cornhole games for young and old, s’mores around the fire pit, and fellowship with neighbors at 7:00 PM on Wednesday the 20th. The children will be out of school, and our start time gives families time to have supper first and then come to the Community Center. This event will be free to all Smoketree residents. Please come out and join us! You’ll be glad you did. We will be accepting donations of gently used winter clothes for donation to a local ministry to the homeless. A great opportunity for the whole family to share with those most in need a tangible expression of the true Christmas spirit. Please help us spread the word😀.

We welcome and need your ideas and participation! Many neighbors have expressed interest in bringing back neighborhood clubs, including a women’s club, a mom’s morning out group, a garden club, a book club, travel group, walking circle and much more. Please call Kathy Morrison (804-794-1401) or Mary Lou Bristol (804-378-3214) to ask questions, share ideas or to volunteer with our nascent Social Committee.

Have a truly restful and blessing filled holiday season!

Future plans, yet to be finalized, include a Snowflake Social on Saturday evening January 20th, a Valentine’s Dance on Saturday, February 10th, a St Patrick’s Day celebration on Friday, March 16th, a Spring Fling on Saturday, April 14th, a Community Yard Sale/Fundraiser on Saturday, May 12th (3 to 5 PM), and an old fashioned Community Field Day on Saturday, May 19th.

If you have yet to join your Smoketree Association, please do so. We need your engagement to help improve our community and invest in preserving and increasing the value of your homes. It will not only be fun, but probably the best investment you can make, at $55 per year. And if you are a Smoketree resident who has joined the pool, your dues are paid already, and you are an association member with full voting rights. Thanks again for helping your neighbors make Smoketree a premier community for young and old!
